06 INSURANCE
Is insurance required for travel to Malaysia?
1.
Yes. Travellers who are short-term visitors (including business and official travellers)
must purchase mandatory travel insurance with a minimum coverage of USD20,000
for COVID-19-related medical treatment, hospitalisation and quarantine costs.
Travellers to Malaysia must carry with them an electronic or physical copy of their
insurance policy to facilitate their entry into Malaysia.
Fully vaccinated travellers from Singapore are exempted from this requirement.
2. What are the groups of people entering Malaysia who are exempted from
purchasing travel insurance?
• Permanent Resident
• Spouse (husband or wife) of a Malaysian citizen and their children
• Long term (social) visit pass holder
• Expatriate/payroll officers/resident officer
• Foreign workers including foreign maids*
• Student pass holder*
• Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) residents with the duration of stay in Malaysia
more than three (3) months
*Subject to insurance requirements under foreign workers programme and student
programme
As of 1st April, the following countries have been exempted from the requirement for
travel insurance:
• Singapore - Fully vaccinated travellers from Singapore are exempted from this
requirement. Travellers who are partially or not vaccinated will still have to
purchase travel insurance.
