Malaysia has adopted the Sorensen health literacy framework and had
customized a shortened version of the survey instrument in the National
Health and Morbidity Survey (2019) and Malaysia Health Literacy
Survey (2023). The original instrument contains 47 questions (HLS-
EU-Q47), and the shortened Malaysian version contains 18 questions
(HLS-M-Q18). The level of health literacy is also simplified into three
categories: limited, sufficient and excellent.
