According to Sorensen’s framework (Figure 1), health literacy refers to
individual competencies related to accessing, understanding, appraising
and applying health information across three domains of healthcare,
disease prevention and health promotion, demonstrating a shift in
perspective from an individual to a population. This framework provides a
conceptual basis for developing and validating measurement tools. There
are four levels of measuring health literacy; inadequate, problematic,
sufficient and excellent. Placing greater emphasis on heath literacy outside
of healthcare settings has the potential to impact on preventative health
and reduce pressures on health systems.
