                     LITERACY

The term health literacy was first proposed as a basic functional skill for individuals
to access and understand basic health information. The definition has since evolved
to include higher-level competencies to maintain and promote health in modern
society. Health literacy is viewed as a global public health goal as it is considered
a social determinant of health and an essential mechanism to achieve sustainable
                          development goals.
